Hang
Art
566 Sutter Street
San Francisco, CA |
I had heard about the Hang Art
gallery many times from friends and fellow artist and I've have
walked by it while downtown shopping with the wife more times than
I can remember. Most of the time I just look in the window, but
today was going to be different.
Hang Art was holding and event
of the kind I just love to go too, the kind where you get to watch
and talk to the artist while they are working. It's almost like
taking a free art class and the networking with other artist is
always fun and educational.
Featured artist for the day where DAVe
Warnke, Jylian Gustlin, Catherine Mackey, Liz
Maxwell, Jose Arenas, Erik Jacobsen, Diane
Rollins Feissel, Siddharth Parasnis, and others.
I got there early so not everyone was
there yet but it gave me the chance to talk to a few of the artist
before crowds of people would be milling about.
I spent some time chatting to DAVe
about his very interesting marker drawings and a little about his
gorilla style self promotion tactics. You may have seen some of
his posters and stickers around town with his amusing surreal characters
and the name "DAVe". Anyway DAVe had some
of his drawing out on his table so people could color their very
own DAVe art, which I thought was fun idea and a great way
to have people get involved in his art. After chatting a little
while DAVe was even nice enough to do a little art trade
with me, which I thought was really nice as these days it's pretty
rare to get free art.
Todd Berman was another interesting
fellow that was doing quick sketches of random people at the gallery.
His speed is really pretty amazing and I liked the drawing, so I
exchanged a little coin of the realm with him for the sketch he
did of me when I was just sitting around. Someday I might try to
have him do one of Cyn for our little home gallery.
I was also watching several other artist
working on charcoal drawings and acrylic paintings, but something
about Josh Keyes drawing of our little world covered in street
signs caught my imagination. I don't even know how to describe his
drawings other than to call them Bio Spheres of a sort. It's much
easier to understand them by just looking at them, so be sure to
check out his site.
The Hang Art gallery itself
is a inviting space to walk around with a very nice range of artwork
and styles. Little did I know I would bump into Eric working
there that I had met sometime before at a Jon "Bean"
Hastings Drawing Class at the Cartoon Art Museum. A rather
nice fellow that explained to me how the gallery works and the artist
selection process and all that other gallery stuff that I know nothing
about. He was kind enough to ask me to send in a CD when I'm ready
of some works that I'm still pulling together.
So while I had to leave early in the
day and didn't get to experience the whole event, I can say it was
a good experience and one I would gladly go to again ... maybe next
time I'll be a featured artist ... hey it could happen, don't laugh.
